Our goal is to reduce cancer deaths in Maine.
A program of the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Department of Health and Human Services, ScreenMaine.org is designed to address the leading cause of death in Maine: cancer. Maine has significantly higher cancer incidence and death rates than the rest of the U.S.
Breast, cervical, colorectal, and lung cancer can be detected early through screening, which can save lives. ScreenMaine.org promotes the breast, cervical, colorectal, and lung cancer screening recommendations established by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF).
Program Goals
The common goals of the Maine CDC Cancer Prevention & Control Programs are to reduce cancer mortality, and increase cancer screening rates by:
- Providing no-cost or reduced-cost breast and cervical screening and diagnosis services for Mainers who qualify (link to qualifications);
- Promoting awareness of breast, cervical, colorectal, and lung screening services and guidelines, and the importance of screening and early detection;
- Providing public and professional education; and
- Promoting healthy behaviors, reducing cancer disparities between different demographic groups, and fostering statewide partnerships that enable a synergistic approach to reducing the physical, emotional and economic impact of cancer.
